Before dismantling existing fire-protection devices and air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, operators should be aware of the existence of halons or CFCs in the system. Halons in fire systems and air-conditioning and refrigerant gases should not be released directly into the atmosphere. The Department of Administrative Services Centre for Environmental Management operates a National Halon Bank, in which existing Halon can be stored and distributed for essential uses. Halon which is removed from BCF’s (Halon 1211) or fixed extinguishers systems (Halon 1301) should be stored in separate cylinders.
• Surface-finishing equipment using abrasive and water blasting, sanding and grinding should have dust-collection devices fitted
• Clean equipment and working areas regularly to minimise the sources of dust and/or reduce the risk of a dust-ignited fire or explosion
• Satisfactory control requires careful equipment siting, protective screens, adequate ventilation and good housekeeping
