Emergency response and evacuation procedures are known, practised, and carried out effectively when required.

Listen to this Topic

Evacuations may be conducted with or without the use of an Evacuation Alarm System or depending on the event, a building lock down may be more appropriate.

In any evacuation, certain staff have been delegated the roles of Evacuation Coordinator, Deputy Evacuation Coordinator and Warden. Warden or Evacuation Coordinators are responsible for the evacuation of a particular level of the building. The Evacuation Coordinator and their Deputy coordinate the evacuation and liaise with Emergency Services personnel. During the evacuation, Warden or Evacuation Coordinators have complete authority over all persons in and near the building.

An evacuation will normally be signalled by the triggering, either manually or automatically, of the building evacuation alarms, where installed. Where the system fails or an emergency situation warrants, the evacuation command will be given by the Evacuation Coordinator or Deputy, Security Officer or Emergency Services personnel, and may be relayed by the Warden or Evacuation Coordinator, or a staff member or other person given authority to do so.

When an evacuation Block has been initiated, the procedure will be adhered to as follows, (unless the circumstances require an alteration):

• Remain calm and cease activities.
• Do not collect personal possessions.
• Leave the building by the designated evacuation paths or as directed by a Warden or Evacuation Coordinator, Security Officer, Emergency Services personnel, or supervisor by the most direct route – DO NOT RUN
• Proceed to the designated evacuation assembly point or other designated area as appropriate or directed by a Warden or Evacuation Coordinator, Security Officer, Emergency Services personnel, or supervisor.
• Obey all instructions from a Warden or Evacuation Coordinator, Security Officer, Emergency Services personnel, or supervisor.
• Do not attempt to re-enter the building until instructed to do so by a Warden or Evacuation Coordinator, Security Officer, or Emergency Services personnel.

NOTE: Staff in charge are responsible for the safe evacuation or containment of persons within that area of responsibility

Evacuate as far-away as possible and for evacuation management, security and health and safety, all persons evacuated from the building should remain in their designated assembly area until the situation is stabilised.
