Storm Water Management

Consider channelling stormwater to gardens or a dam for use in dry times to reduce water rates. Always ensure water runoff does not cause erosion

Where the runoff leaves a site, outlet design should allow for non-erosive sheet flow. For minor flows, hay bales or silt fences on contours may be sufficient. Natural vegetation buffers along regular drainage paths also will control erosion and sediment.

Stockpiled topsoil from previous excavations should be spread over disturbed land to help revegetation. Hay, straw or wood-fibre mulches can also help. Surfaces exposed during prolonged projects should be stabilised while awaiting final top soiling or other rehabilitation. Replace removed vegetation with a fast-growing, surface-binding species. Surface-binding vegetation will reduce the need for other costly sediment-control measures.
