Ladders should be installed so that:
• They are on stable ground and secured against movement both at the top and base.
• Step ladders are fully opened with spreaders locked into position.
• Only approved attachments are used.
• Extend at least one metre above the access level.
• Metal ladders are not to be used where there are electrical hazards.
• Single and extension ladders are placed at a slope ratio of 4 vertical to 1 horizontal (4:1).
• They are not used on working platforms or scaffolds to gain extra height.
Only light duty work should be undertaken while on a ladder, where three points of contact can be maintained, and tools can be operated safely with one hand.
Depending on the type of work you may be required to use a fall prevention system that is connected to a ladder.
